Raising Waterfowl
Why Ducks?

Why Geese?

Of the many different types of poultry, ducks and geese are the most economical. While duck meat production dominates the duck raising industry, ducks  are also outstanding egg producers, and they are great for snail, slug, and bug control.  Ducks are amazing.  Many people incorrectly assume that you must have a pond or stream to raise ducks; however, ducks need no more than a kiddy pool, water trough or container of water which must be deep enough to submerge their heads (3” or 4” deep).  Keeping ducks is very simple.  Ducks love to be held, and they make great pets.  Amazingly, many breeds of ducks lay better than the best chicken breeds, and their eggs are very healthy.

Geese, like ducks, have many uses such as meat, goose down, and aquatic plant control. Among their many abilities is to protect other small animals such as chickens and ducks against winged predators such as hawks. Although it seems like they would eat a lot of food, Geese eat very little when provided with a good amount of green grass. Having a natural pond or stream is not needed to raise geese, and essentially all they need is a kiddy pool or other container of water which must be at least 6 inches in depth.  Geese are completely vegetarian. While geese do not lay eggs year round, their eggs are huge. Ultimately, geese are easy to raise, make great pets, and have endless uses.
