Raising Turkey Poults

Newborn turkey poults need to be fed 28% protein gamebird crumble ration preferably out of a feeder that they can’t climb into. When they are first born until about the age of two weeks old, they might drown, so fill the drinking section of your turkey waterer with marbles, leaving small sections for them to just stick their beaks into. Put the waterer low enough on the ground for a baby turkey to reach. And after about 2 weeks you can take the marbles out of their waterer. Don’t use pebbles because the sharp edges of gravel can cut their beaks. If they can stick their head in, they can drown. Pine shavings or burlap should be used as flooring for turkey poults. Do not put newpapers on the ground when they are poults because they might slip and break their legs. As soon as they are almost mature, you can begin weaning them from 28% protein down to 20% protein. Once they are completely mature, slowly switch them to approximately 17-18% protein for the rest of their lives. Most feed stores don’t carry 18% protein, they only carry 16 and 20% protein, so you can mix those two together to get what you need.

They should have adequate space all of their lives. Once they are fully feathered, it is preferable that you should have them in a sun enclosure or run where no hawks can get in to kill them but they can go outside in the sun to forage. This can be done with a chicken tractor or something similar. Once they are large enough to withstand attack from most predators you can allow them outside. The predators that most commonly kill them when they are young are cats, eagles, hawks, owls, foxes, pack rats, raccoon, snakes, rats, skunks, weasels, minks, vultures, coyotes, bobcats, possums and dogs.
